SEASONAL SALES STRATEGY

Form vs Function: A look at tube feeders.

Marketing is more than just advertising. It is providing your customer with enough information to make an informed decision and also give him/her a reason to desire the benefit of their purchase sooner rather than later. One way to do this is by using a story or interesting fact in your sales presentation.

Consider a tube feeder. What do you see when you look at a tube feeder ?

Personally I see a shrub. Yes - A shrub. Similar to the Viburnum shown to the right. Let me explain why:

Notice the shrub. It has a stem, twigs and some seed pods.

Now look at the feeder. Consider the tube as a stem. The ports are the seed pods. The perch is a twig. So Form follows Function. A tube feeder represents a shrub.

Next time a customer comes in saying that he/she put mixed seed into a tube feeder and the birds picked out a seed and scatter the rest on the ground remind her/him that a tube feeder is like a shrub. Birds expect and nature provides just one seed on each shrub. So if form is to follow function then a tube feeder should only be filled with one type of seed.

A great explanation, and sales tool to explain why a customer needs more than one tube feeder.
